Rooms is back! Not a happy end, but at least something…

07 Aug

Last night (here in Germany – afternoon in US) some people told me that they already saw an update in the store but could not download it yet. So I went into iTunesConnect and saw Rooms finally “green” and available! It then just needed some time waiting to get all stores up to date.

So what was wrong?

Honestly I still don’t know yet. Just 3 days ago I got an idea. I reread my diary of those 3 months review problems some months ago and remembered a person who already helped me back then. It is an Apple employee who is (or at least was back then) using Rooms too. So since all my mails and contact form requests seemed not to be read by the support (or steve) , I thought I should just try this last email. So I wrote him asking if he has some ideas or if he could help me in some way with this. Some few hours later he already answered me saying he will see what he can do. And some more hours later he seemed already looking into it and just wanted me to wait up until monday.

Then yesterday I got a call again from the review person who already called me for the second review, asking to remove the voip mode. Seemed that he got mail from the Apple employee I asked for help :-)
Again, he said that he already told me the reason with the voip mode and again I told him that I already removed this voip feature directly after the first rejection. So he looked into the case and saw the approval plus the removal 4 min later. So he assured me to look into it and that it seemed like an error in the system and will call me back after the weekend.
An hour later he tried to call again, but missed me :-/ Trying to call back just gave me some computer hotline and not him. So I waited… until some users gave me the hint that it’s BACK !

So after all, I still don’t know why the app was pulled again those 4 minutes later after it got approved. And also still don’t know if it really got pulled in first place because of a certificate error or just because of an “error in the system”… So I will though send one last email asking for some explanations. With not much hope getting some answers anyway :-/

Any downside of all this?

Actually at first sight the impact of Rooms being almost one month totally pulled from the store seems really bad :-( I already mentioned it in some of the last posts: Rooms was in the Top25 in germany and Top100 in most of the countries since the first release. Adding new features and fixing a lot of bugs over the time was hard work to achieve and keep this. Finding it now back online, it lost a lot of this ranking, which in my experience over the years is one of the really important facts to find new customers. Sitting on rank 72 now in germany and 154 in US is a huge problem now :-/ All that because of a stupid certificate issue…

This all makes me worry about the next time when something like this happens. I mean, what if I hadn’t got the idea to write this other Apple employee? It didn’t seem that anyone in the review team saw or even cared about those problems… I can’t just send a mail to this one guy every time I have some stupid problems?! (keeping in mind that it was not the first time)

So I still entreat Apple to do something here. You can’t treat developers in the App Store like this. We NEED more employees on Apples side reading our concerns and emails! Not all of us have a direct hotline number like the big companies or some nice person somewhere else on Apple helping on such problems :-/

A final little present

To say thanks to all people reading those lately blog posts, spreading the word, sending me encouragements and just helping me getting through all this by sending a lot of emails, twitter posts, comments and more > I’ve a little present:

· Rooms will be FREE for 3 days, from Monday to Wednesday! ·

So if you are not sure if Rooms is the app you need, grab your copy (Affiliate Link) within those 3 days, try it out and for sure you will though receive all further updates for free too, when it is back on the old price. And if you already bought it, feel free to tell a friend, so you both can chat together ;-)
(still I’m not angry if you buy it anyway before or after those days *g*)

And to be honest, maybe that fixes at least a little of the downsides after this hiatus. So if you feel like helping me still spreading the word. Twitter this POST! THX!

How is this multitasking option with iPhone 4 and iOS4.. It seems to disconnect me quite fast if I do something else with phone? How long should Rooms stay connected at background.. Would be nice get option for popup messages, if something happends at irc rooms.. Atleast if someone say something.. But would be nice atleast stay connected..

      Hi Mika,

Rooms should stay connected for about 8-10 minutes after you closed it with multitasking enabled.
Staying connected for longer would need the voip mode which was not granted by Apple (see the recent blog posts)

All chat rooms are then handled as “inactive” when Rooms is in background and so you will get your normal notifications depending on your own settings within Rooms (a “click” for the first new message in an inactive chat room, a “sound” on private messages or nick/word alerts).
Additionally you will get a popup (local push message) for private messages or nick alerts. Theres another little update in review now, which fixes some little issues with that, and should for once come those days ;-)

Making it free wont give you a high rank once you switch it back to paid. Just saying, Apple throws away the ranks when you switch from free to paid. Cheers…

      Hi John,

sure, you are right. That would be really fatal if you just can “push” your rank with such tricks!
So please don’t get me wrong. Making it free first and foremost is for just saying thanks! The intention for additionally “fixing some downside of all this” was just that those new users may then recommend it to some other people afterwards too, which would be nice but not any must.

Done! Thanks for a great app, I hated to hear about your troubles, and I’m glad it is sorted out now… aside from the ranking issues. Vielen Dank!

Great App, using it daily to stay in touch with the other sysadmins from my team. There is one feature I’d like to see in future releases. Rooms should wait to autojoin channels until the user is identified by NickServ. I join a few channels that require to be identified. Autojoin is usually faster than the conversation with NickServ.

I’ll try to fix that. Added it to my todo.
